Dirt Yard Cricket
Here in India, I play cricket almost every day. Sometimes we go to the dirt yard at the Siva temple to play like in the picture. Sometimes we play it at the school.
I play cricket with my friends Akshay, Rohan and Vishal. Sometimes Rohan’s little brother Rahul plays, too. It is so easy to play in a little space. The space we play in is a flower-lined driveway at Rohan's. I think it is the best game I can play in India. We also play Chinese checkers, snakes and ladders, carrom, shuttle, chess and drawing. I play baseball at home, and the bat is so heavy, but in cricket it is really easy because the bat is so light and it’s made out of wood. It is really fun in a narrow space such as a driveway because they always try to hit really lightly, so I can catch the ball easily and they’ll be out.
Cricket was originally invented in an unknown place. Researchers think it was from England and others think not. Cricket players play in places such as India, England, and some in Australia.
You would need about 19 players to play. Lots of them would be out fielders. There would be a bowler, who throws the ball at the bat. You’d need a keeper, who catches the ball if the batter doesn’t hit the ball. Most of all, you’d need a batter who hits the ball and runs. Basically, the way you play is that the bowler throws the ball at the batter, who throws the ball with one bounce before it hits the bat. There are two pieces of wood that are stacked to make a triangle. The bowler throws the ball with one bounce and if it hits the wood the batter is out.
